Pressure is mounting on the Congress leadership to effect changes in the Maharashtra government and review the working of the Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee in the wake of party’s defeat in Karnataka.

For several months, talk is on in party circles about a change in guard in Mantralaya with several high-profile leaders including Narayan Rane, Ashok Chavan and others eyeing the chief minister’s post.

There is also a demand amongst section of partymen to appoint a new president in place of Prabha Rau.

Rane went to Delhi to discuss state affairs with party president Sonia Gandhi on Tuesday leading to fresh speculation about a change in leadership in state. Rane, who is said to be lobbying with Union minister Ambika Soni refused to comment when asked about the leadership tussle.

All India Congress Committee in-charge for Maharashtra Margaret Alva is coming to Mumbai next Monday. “Although Alva is coming for Congress-NCP co-ordination committee meeting, various issues pertaining to organisational matters will be discussed,’’ a party office bearer said.

‘’We will have to take some decision about revamping the party and government. Otherwise we could meet the same fate like in Karnataka.

Several issues will be discussed whether to replace leaders in state government and in Pradesh Congress. The leadership may even consider Cabinet expansion to accommodate dalit or minority leaders,’’ said a party leader.
