Policemen in Andheri were left red-faced after they came to know of an attack on a real estate agent only after the gangster who claimed to have ordered the attack began calling up mediapersons to boast of his ‘feat’.

Some men fired at Nagesh Cheena Kunder, 54, around 10 am while he was passing by Shiv Shakti Industrial Estate in Andheri (E) on Wednesday morning. Kunder was not hurt but so shaken that he went into hiding and could not be contacted for almost two hours.

Meanwhile, by-standers who witnessed the attack informed mediapersons who began calling up police stations in the area seeking details. However, the police were clueless.

The mystery was solved only after a man called up a TV channel claiming to be fugitive gangster Hemant Pujari. He claimed to have ordered the attack on Kunder.

By then, Kunder had recovered from the trauma and gathered the courage to go to MIDC police station.

According to the police, the attackers came on foot, opened fire at Kunder who was in a car and left the spot within seconds.

Inspector Pramod Kokate, Sakinaka police station, said, “On getting numerous calls from mediapersons, I sent my men to three hospitals to check if any patient had reported being hit by a bullet. I came to know the facts only around noon.”

Senior inspector P R Sonawane, MIDC police station, said, “We came to know about the incident from mediapersons who said somebody claiming to be Hemant Pujari had claimed responsibility for the attack. Nobody informed us about the incident. But as soon as we did, we rushed the spot. We are not sure if Pujari indeed had a hand in the attack.”

An officer from the control room (western region) said, “The media kept enquiring about the incident but we were not aware about it for around two hours. Had we known on time, we would have informed all the control rooms.”

Sources said Kunder had some time ago lodged a police complaint that Pujari had demanded Rs 50 lakh.
