Randhawa, Kapur tee off Open dream

Sentosa: India’s top ranked golfer Jyoti Randhawa and talented youngster Shiv Kapur will be among 67 players who will tee off at the Sentosa Golf Club next week in a bid to book their spot in the world's oldest Major, The Open Championship.

Randhawa, ranked 70th in the world, and five of his compatriots will be among 67 hopefuls who will aim to rub shoulders with the golfing elite at Royal Birkdale in July.

Their task will be cut out as there are just four spots up for grabs at the two-day International Final Qualifying (IFQ) Asia starting Tuesday.

Apart from Randhawa and Kapur, ranked 238, the other Indians in the fray are Rahil Gangjee, Digvijay Singh, Amandeep Johl and Gurbaaz Mann.

“Obviously I would like to qualify for The Open. I’ve played at Sentosa before and hopefully it all comes together again so that I can qualify,” said Randhawa, a seven-time winner on the Asian Tour.

“I think as you get better as a player, you need to play more in the Majors,” said the 35-year-old Indian. “Playing in Europe and playing decently, I think it's about time I go on to play in the Majors and perform remarkably.”

“It’s not just about going there to make up the numbers - it’s about making your mark there. I think my game is ready for that and if I can play well, it'll be great.”

They will fight with other hopefuls over 36 holes, primarily from the Asian Tour, at the Serapong course at the Sentosa Golf Club, home of the Asian Tours flagship event, the Barclays Singapore Open.

Thailand’s Prom Meesawat and Chinnarat Phadungsil, Singapore’s Lam Chih Bing and Mardan Mamat, Filipino Juvic Pagunsan, and Japan Golf Tour regulars Tomohiro Kondo and Keiichiro Fukabori will be the other notable competitors.

The British Open, golf’s oldest Major, takes place from July 17-20
